Intro

Let Go of the Old Story

Most people don't get stuck because they lack ability. They get stuck because they are still carrying an old story about who they are.

Maybe it's:

  • "I'm not disciplined."
  • "I'm bad with money."
  • "I'm not a leader."
  • "I've never been good at public speaking."
  • "I'm not creative."
  • "I always procrastinate."

At some point, these may have been observations.

But over time, observations become identities (and identities become limitations).

The problem isn't that people have stories, but that many of those stories are outdated.

They were created years ago:

  • by past failures
  • old environments
  • childhood experiences
  • criticism from others
  • versions of ourselves that no longer exist

Yet many people continue living as if those stories are still true.

The Story May No Longer Be True

Imagine carrying around a map from 10 years ago.

Roads have changed. Cities have changed. You have changed.

Yet you keep navigating with outdated directions.

That's what many people do psychologically. They continue using old stories to explain who they are.

  • Maybe they struggled with confidence years ago.
    • So, they still tell themselves they are not confident.
  • Maybe they failed at something once.
    • So, they conclude they're not capable.
  • Maybe someone criticized them long ago.
    • So, they still carry that label.

The problem is that identities can become frozen in time (and when that happens, growth slows). Because people unconsciously act in ways that reinforce the story they already believe.

This is why identity matters so much.

The story shapes:

  • behavior
  • confidence
  • decisions
  • relationships
  • opportunities

Many people don't need more information, but a revised narrative.

Not a fake one. A more accurate one.

One that reflects who they are becoming, not who they used to be. Because every meaningful transformation eventually requires a willingness to let go of an old version of yourself.

The future often demands a different story.

Do One Thing

A Simple Practice This Week

Complete this sentence:

"The old story I need to let go of is ..."

Then write:

"The new story I am building is ..."

Don't focus on perfection. Focus on possibility.

Then identify one action this week that supports the new story.

Because identities change through evidence.

Book: The Mountain Is You

Many people believe external obstacles are holding them back.

Often, the biggest obstacle is an outdated version of themselves.

In this powerful book, Brianna Wiest explores self-sabotage, emotional growth, identity change, and the hidden patterns that keep people stuck.

One of the biggest lessons:

You cannot become who you're capable of becoming while remaining attached to who you used to be.

Outdated Identity Limits Growth

You are not required to remain who you were 5 years ago (or even 5 months ago).

Growth often begins when you stop defending an old identity and start embracing a new possibility.

Because some stories help us grow (and some stories quietly keep us stuck).

Know the difference.

Then, let go of the one that no longer serves you.

Until next Sunday.

Matthew

P.S. The most powerful change you may ever make is not changing your circumstances, but changing the story you keep telling yourself about who you are.
