Don't Let Pressure Borrow Your Brain
Pressure creates an illusion. It makes everything feel urgent.
- Respond now.
- Decide now.
- Reply now.
- Fix it now.
But urgency and importance are rarely the same thing.
The best decision-makers understand that pressure changes the quality of their thinking.
Under stress, we tend to:
- Seek certainty too quickly
- Ignore conflicting evidence
- Become emotionally reactive
- Favor familiar solutions
- Stop asking better questions
That's dangerous, especially today.
AI has dramatically increased the speed of information. Within seconds, you can compare ideas, summarize research, and generate recommendations. That's incredibly valuable.
But there's a hidden risk.
When answers come instantly, it's tempting to stop thinking instantly. The real advantage isn't asking AI for the first answer.
It's asking better follow-up questions.
- "What assumptions are we making?"
- "What evidence contradicts this?"
- "What haven't we considered?"
The people who make the best decisions won't simply use AI faster. They'll think more deeply with it because judgment is still human.
And judgment improves when we create space between stimulus and response.
Pressure wants immediacy.
Wisdom often asks for a pause.
